On Thursday March 16^th at approximately 2:15PM Yanira Estella Canjura Martinez was stabbed to death behind 221 Glen Street in Glen Cove. The Glen Cove Police immediately began an investigation into the murder. Nassau County Homicide unit responded to the scene to assist the Glen Cove detectives in the investigation. According to Detective Lieutenant John Nagle, “we immediately determined this was a domestic crime because the victims purse which contained money was not taken. Surveillance recording from the area also confirmed the theory that robbery was not a motive.”  A person of interest, an ex-boyfriend, was quickly identified from the investigation.

A gas leak was reported on Hitching Post Lane on Friday, March 27^th, causing the evacuation of nearby Gribbin Elementary School.  At approximately 11:30 a.m., a gas odor was detected near the site of a water main break where work was being done.  Gribbin Elementary School administration officials were notified and students were immediately evacuated from the building.  Fire Department and EMS crews were dispatched to investigate the situation.  No injuries were reported as a result of the leak.  As a precautionary measure, Gribbin students were relocated to Robert M. Finley Middle School.   The relocated students were dismissed from the Middle School at regular time on their assigned buses.  All walker pick up students were dismissed from the parking lot adjoining Deasy School.  National Grid is on scene and is replacing the compromised gas line.  A NYS Public Safety Officer is also on scene as part of standard operating procedures due involvement of the Gribbin School.  Gribbin Elementary School is expected to reopen on Monday, March 30^th.

On Thursday March 26^th at approximately 3:20 PM the Glen Cove police responded to a call for a woman who was being assaulted on Glen Street.  The victim, identified as 32 year old Yanira Estella Canjura Martinez was stabbed multiple times in the parking lot behind 221 Glen Street, which is next to the Dollar Tree. The victim was transported to the North Shore University Hospital in Glen Cove but succumbed to her injuries. The defendant is described as a male Hispanic who fled the scene east on Pearsall Ave towards Town Path after the attack. Glen Cove Detectives as well as Nassau County Detectives are currently investigating the crime. According to Glen Cove Detective lieutenant John Nagle the incident was caught on a surveillance camera in the vicinity of the crime. “We believe the victim knew her attacker and we believe it was domestic in nature”.  The victim was a single mom who was in the area to pick up her five year old daughter from her babysitter at the time of the attack.  The Glen Cove Police and Child Protective Services are attempting to locate relatives of the child  at this time. IMPORTANT UPDATE: The Glen Cove Police Department would like to issue the following statement to further clarify the incident that occurred on March 26th, 2015 in the vicinity of Pearsall Avenue.    During the initial stages of the investigation facts and circumstances were uncovered that made clear the general public was at no time ever in any danger and that this was a targeted attack between two people that shared a domestic relationship. There is no need for any further fear or concern on... part of the community. This investigation remains active and we will update the community as needed.   The Glen Cove Police Department has an obligation to provide for the general safety of our community as well as its officers while protecting the sanctity of crime victims and their families.    We respectfully request that the community help support this effort by refraining from unwarranted speculation and discussion on social media during such events.

Join the 340+ young baseball and softball players as they celebrate the start of the 2015 season with an Opening Day Parade from Finley Middle School through downtown Glen Cove and ending at John Maccarone Memorial (City) Stadium on Saturday, April 18. The parade will kick-off at 10 AM.

Gold Coast Little League is a baseball and softball program for boys and girls in Glen Cove and surrounding communities currently in Kindergarten through Grade 9, operating under the direction of the City of Glen Cove Parks & Recreation Dept.

Mayor Reginald Spinello would like all Glen Cove’s young egg hunters and their parents to mark their calendars on April 6^th for the 14^th annual City of Glen Cove Egg Hunt. The Spring Egg Hunt will be held at 11 a.m. sharp at City Stadium on Morris Avenue. It is open to Glen Cove children, ages 3 to 10 years old. Don’t be late on this very important date because a famous, floppy-eared guest will be present to greet all the children.

Due to this winters’ storms Glen Cove roads received a high amount of damage.  If there is a problem on your street you are encouraged to contact the City pot-hole hotline at 516-676-4402.  Glen Cove DPW logs all reported pot-holes and transmits the information to the DPW garage for action.  However, it is important to remember that many roads in Glen Cove belong to the county and are not under Glen Cove DPW’s jurisdiction. 

Glen Cove’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be stepping off Sunday March 22^nd, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. from Robert M. Finley Middle School. The annual parade, put together by Glen Cove Hibernians, has chosen The Very Reverend Dom Elias Carr, Headmaster of All Saints Regional Catholic School, to be the parade’s Grand Marshal. Other parade honorees include Robert Ottaviano and Laurieanne DeFilippo in the capacity of “Aides to the Marshal”. This year’s parade theme is “the heritage of Catholic School education on the Gold Coast”. The theme is in recognition of two approaching anniversaries, the 25^th anniversary of All Saints Catholic School and the 100^th anniversary of catholic school education in this area.

Extreme Winter Recovery Operations

I am proud to say that the City’s Department of Public Works and all of Glen Cove’s first responders have done an outstanding job this winter season.  It has been one of the toughest winters on record but Glen Cove DPW and all of our police, fire, and EMS crews were up for the challenge.  Our Department of Public Works instituted a new organizational strategy aimed at reducing expenses and enhancing services.  My office in conjunction with DPW remediated 34 winter related residential issues using a Mayor’s issue log which is tracked to ensure accountability.  The city implemented a 24-hour live phone operator hotline to help mediate residents’ issues during this January’s winter super storm.  All of the city’s staff worked together effectively to ensure residential safety during this long winter season.
