July 13, 2015… In response to the request of area residents and at the prompting of Glen Cove’s Department of Public Works (DPW), New York State’s Department of Transportation (DOT) recently installed four new safety crash barriers in the City of Glen Cove.  The crash barriers are located at Town Path and the Arterial Highway (two new crash barriers), Pulaski Street and the Arterial Highway and at the Arterial Highway’s gateway to Glen Cove.  Featuring a new steel enforced design with high impact safety visuals, the cost of the crash barriers were funded by New York State and installed by the Department of Transportation.  “For many Glen Cove residents and business owners, our former crash barriers were an eye sore in desperate need of replacement,” said Mayor Spinello.  “Jim Byrne, Director of Glen Cove’s Department of Public Works made it a priority to engage the DOT in this critical safety issue and I am very pleased with the results and appreciate the outstanding support and responsiveness of the DOT.”

Each year dozens of children and untold numbers of pets are left in parked vehicles and die from hyperthermia or heat stroke. Hyperthermia is an acute condition that occurs when the body absorbs more heat than it can handle. Hyperthermia can occur even on a mild day. Studies have shown that the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to a dangerous level for children, pets and even adults. Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate. The effects can be more severe on children because their bodies have not developed the ability to efficiently regulate its internal temperature.

July 6, 2015…On land and Sound, Glen Cove’s young sailors learn the basic of rowing at Mercandante Beach at Garvies Point.  New to the City’s summer program offerings for kids and a favorite of Mayor Spinello, upcoming rowing lesson session dates are July 13 through July 23 

and July 27 through August 7. 

July 6, 2015…Citing a record event turn-out, Mayor Reggie Spinello joined children and their families as they took their bikes, trikes, wagons, unicycles and battery-powered vehicles to the streets of downtown Glen Cove to participate in the City’s annual July 4^th Children’s Bike parade.

July 6, 2015…Upon learning of the sudden passing of Mayor Aurelio Cangero of Sturno, Italy; Mayor Reggie Spinello expressed his condolences on behalf of the City of Glen Cove to the residents of Glen Cove’s international sister city.   “At this time of sorrow, the City of Glen Cove extends its deepest condolences to the family of Mayor Aurelio Cangero and the great people of Sturno,” said Mayor Spinello in a correspondence to Deputy Mayor Vito Di Leo which was shared with Cangero’s family and the Sturnese community in Italy during Mayor Cangero’s funeral mass. Mayor Cangero was a strong leader and a man of great integrity and compassion; he will be greatly missed by many in the Glen Cove community who share family ties and a history with Sturno.

Sturno, Italy and Glen Cove are sister cities who work together to preserve the ethnic heritage and history of the Sturnese people.  

July 2, 2015…Mayor Reggie Spinello, joined by Deputy Auxiliary Police Chief Frank Pronesti, swore in three new Glen Cove Auxiliary Police Officers, Milagritos Morales, Agueda Lopez and Shirley Winston. The Auxiliary Police Department is an active part of the Glen Cove community and they can be seen helping to regulate church-related traffic, patrolling the beach during the summer and providing security for other large events.

June 17, 2015… Hot cars and cool nights, Autostrade Glen Cove brings its finely tuned engines to the streets of downtown Glen Cove to rev up the excitement of car enthusiasts. This bi-weekly event is held every other Thursday (June 25; July 2, 16 and 30; Aug 6 and 20) through September 3^rd from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on School Street in Glen Cove. The City closes thru traffic and invites car fans to show their vehicles or simply admire the estimated 170 exotic and vintage autos that are on display. “Autotrade Glen Cove underscores the diversity of events in our City and the enthusiasm our residents have for their cars and for supporting our downtown restaurants, bars, coffee shops and volunteer Fire Department. In fact, our city is becoming a bit of a Motor City as we also host the Gold Coast Cruisers Waterfront Car show on June 28 in Morgan Memorial Park and in Bimmerstock in September,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello.

June 17, 2015…In tribute to a true American hero and man of great valor, the United States Marine Corps and the City of Glen Cove will rededicate the Dan Daly Memorial Monument on Wednesday, June 24^th at 4p.m. at Glen Cove’s Monument Park (Forest Avenue and Cottage Row). As part of the ceremonial proceedings, Glen Cove Mayor Reggie Spinello will recognize Glen Cove’s Sgt. Major Dan Daly and there will be a performance of a 16 piece U.S. Marine Corps. Band. “Sergeant Major Dan Daly was called the fightiest Marine ever known by a Marine Major General,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello. “It is an honor to remember our hometown hero and pay tribute to his service to the United States of America and the U.S. Marine Corps.”  For the one-hour ceremony, Forest Avenue will be closed from Cottage Row to Dosoris Lane.

Sergeant Major Daniel “Dan” Daly was a U.S. Marine who earned two Medals of Honor, the Navy Cross, the Army Distinguished Service Cross, the Purple Heart and the Croix de Guerre from France.   Daly was born on November 11, 1873 in Glen Cove, retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1929 and died in 1937.
