Glen Cove, NY, November 16, 2015…Mayor Reggie Spinello welcomed Glen Cove High School Senior Amanda Heavey to City Hall along with her mentor, retired Glen Cove police Sergeant and City of Glen Cove Liaison for Student Affairs, Jack McDougal. The visit was part of Amanda’s immersion into the interworking of the Glen Cove Police Department as part of her participation in the high school’s W.I.S.E. program. W.I.S.E. is Wise Individualized Student Experiences and this innovative program offers Glen Cove students the opportunity to select a career, hobby or special topic that is of interest to them.

Noon at its annual Veterans Day Memorial Service on Wednesday, November 11. “It is a privilege to recognize Master Sergeant Noon as she is the first female to be honored during the City’s annual event that pays homage to our City’s military veterans,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello. “Master Sergeant Noon is a born leader, she has served in the military for over 18 years and is the first female member of the Glen Cove VFW James Donohue Post 347,” said Commander Lavery.

Glen Cove, NY, November 6, 2015 – (Pictured Left to Right) Glen Cove’s Department of Sanitation (DOS) staff Chris Comintino, Chris Larice, Cezary Duda, Derek Morra, Mayor Spinello, Jerry Morales, Gerald Apricio, and DOS Supervisor Doug Poncet introduce Glen Cove’s new Single Stream Recycling Trucks. These new additions to the Department of Public Work’s fleet will support the City’s Single Stream Recycling program. The recycling imitative launched in August, 2015, has already shown Glen Cove’s commitment with recycling participation increasing by over 28% since the programs launch. “The City receives $5.05 per ton of recyclable materials collected through this program so the uptick in participation is going to result in cost savings for the City. The more our residents recycle with our “All In. One Bin” effort, the more money the City can save while reducing the waste sent to our landfills; now that’s what I call a win-win situation,” Mayor Spinello said.
Special Sanitation Schedule for Yard Waste, Leaf, and Metal Pick-up
Due to Election Day on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, the Sanitation Department will not collect yard waste on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 but will instead pick-up on Saturday, November 7, 2015.
Due to Veteran’s Day on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, the Sanitation Department will not collect yard waste that Wednesday, but will instead pick-up on Saturday, November 14, 2015.
As always, yard waste MUST be curbside by 7am in clear bags or bundled and tied into 4 foot sections.

Costumed Pets Take To the Streets of Glen Cove for Annual Howl’oween Spooktacular
Pet Parade Featured Minions, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Super Cute Super Heroes
Glen Cove, NY, October 26, 2015… Over 130 people and their pets unleashed the spirited fun of Halloween at Glen Cove’s 5th Annual Howl’oween Pet Parade. Sponsored by Glen Cove’s Department of Parks & Recreation, PETCO, Scoopy Doo and Valley Sport & Trophy, the parade and costume contest brought out Glen Cove’s creative best. There were princesses, bumble bees, jail birds, devils, fire and police dogs, a dragon and even a real rabbit. Each participant was asked to bring a canned food or toy donation to benefit Cove Animal Rescue. “The Howl’oween parade is a pet project of Darcy Belyea and her Parks & Recreation team and each year they do a pet-tacular job,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello. “This parade gives us permission to expand our City events to include the pets of our community; it’s their day to play dress up,” added Darcy Belyea, Director, Parks & Recreation.

Mayor Spinello Announces Available Funds for Residential Rehab Program Income Eligible Seniors and Disabled Persons Asked to Apply For Home Improvement Needs
Glen Cove, NY, October 21, 2015… Glen Cove Community Development Agency (CDA) Chairman, Mayor Reggie Spinello, announced today that additional funds for the Residential Rehabilitation Program are now available for eligible Glen Cove residents. Income eligible seniors ages 60+ and handicapped persons are encouraged to apply for the program which provides funding for home repairs including energy conservation, code violation remediation, and handicap accommodation installations. “Since the reinstatement of this program in 2014, the CDA has been able to fund three home repair projects for Glen Cove seniors which included roof repairs, boiler installation, siding repair, window replacement, door hanging, and a hot water heater installation,” said Mayor Spinello. “For Glen Cove seniors and disabled individuals, funding from this program can make a substantial improvement to the quality of their home life.”
Registration Open for Glen Cove Jr. Basketball Program’s 2015-2016 Season
Boys and Girls Grades 3 through 9 Invited To Register; Sponsors Welcome
Glen Cove, NY, October 22, 2015…The City of Glen Cove’s Department of Parks & Recreation invites boys and girls in grades 3 through 9 to register for the 2015-2016 basketball season. Games will begin the week of November 30th and extend through March, 2016. Children will participate in one game and one practice session per week and games will be held at a local elementary school with start times between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. New for this year, there will be three girls’ basketball clinics that will be held on Fridays – November 6th, 13th and 20th at 6:30 p.m. The cost of this opportunity for girls to improve their games skills is included in the program’s registration fees. “Each year the children who participate in our Jr. Basketball program enjoy a rewarding experience as they learn new game skills and the importance of team work and good sportsmanship,” said Darcy Belyea, Director, Glen Cove Parks & Recreation.
Glen Cove Department of Public Works Offers Scare-Free Solution to Disposal of Household Pollutants – Hosts S.T.O.P. Collection on Halloween
October 22, 2015… Glen Cove’s S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) program will be held on Saturday, October 31st from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the DPW Yard on 100 Morris Avenue. The S.T.O.P. program, a service of the Department of Public Works, provides Glen Cove residents with a safe (not scary) and environmentally-friendly way to dispose of old paint (enamel, lead and oil based only, no water or latex based paints), paint thinner, household batteries, brake and transmission fluid, antifreeze, aerosol cans with contents, air conditioning refrigerants, bug and rodent killers, pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, oven cleaner, rug and upholstery cleaner, polish and wood preservatives, pool chemicals, barbeque propane tanks, unused flammable liquids, and light bulbs. No electronics, smoke detectors, fireworks, explosives or medical waste is allowed. Residential waste only and proof of Glen Cove residency required. Glen Cove Community Plants Blooms and Pink Tulip Bulbs to Beautify City During Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Glen Cove, NY, Oct. 19, 2015…Young gardeners joined Mayor Reggie Spinello, the Glen Cove Beautification Commission, Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S. (Cancer Awareness Resource Education Source) and volunteers from the Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club and Glen Cove High School DECA Club to plant beautiful mums and pink tulip bulbs during a recent community planting event and fall clean-up day. This annual program is sponsored by the Glen Cove Beautification Commission and Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S. (Cancer Awareness Resource Education Source) and over 40 volunteers lent the program their green thumbs to help plant 1,000 pink tulip bulbs and 50
mum plants. The event was created by the late Terry Petikas, the founder of Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S to recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and raise awareness of the importance of early cancer detection techniques.

City of Glen Cove and Glen Cove Police Department Support National School Bus Safety Week
Promote Bus Safety Awareness and Enforcement from Oct. 19 – Oct. 24
Glen Cove, NY, October 14, 2015 – In recognition of National School Bus Safety Week, October 19-24, the City of Glen Cove and the Glen Cove Police Department will conduct a public education and enforcement program to remind children, parents and drivers about the importance of bus safety.
The week-long series of activities will include enhanced enforcement by the Glen Cove Police Department for school bus safety compliance on Glen Cove’s top school bus driving corridors including Cedar Swamp Road, Glen Cove Avenue and Forest Avenue. “We have had a number of complaints about drivers ignoring the flashing lights and stop sign arm extension on school buses and that poses a dangerous situation for our children when boarding and disembarking from their buses, “ said Chief William Whitton. “So far this year our police officers have issued a number of summonses to drivers for passing stopped school buses. That violation is punishable by fines ranging between $250 and $400 and up to thirty days in jail. In addition, drivers caught passing stopped school buses will also receive a mandatory 5 points against their driver’s license with repeated offenders receiving a mandatory one-year revocation of their license.”
Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department Hosts Annual Fire Prevention Open House
Glen Cove, NY, Oct. 13, 2015 - On Sunday, October 25, the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department will host its Annual Fire Prevention Open House from 1 to 4 p.m. Residents of all ages are encouraged to attend the event for an informative and fun filled afternoon of fire prevention.
Attendees can watch several demonstrations, including rope rescue, car fire, auto extrication, kitchen stove / oven fire, fire truck rides, fire hose handling and learn about practical steps they can take to prevent fires at home.
Glen Cove and S.A.F.E. to Host “Shed the Meds” Program on Saturday, October 24th
Residents Encouraged to Drop Off Expired/Unused RX Drugs and Medical Supplies
Oct 6, 2015…Mayor Reggie Spinello, S.A.F.E Glen Cove Coalition along with the Glen Cove Police Department, EMS, and the Glen Cove Downtown B.I.D. have scheduled the fall “Drug Reclamation Day” aka “Shed The Meds” collection day for Saturday, October 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to provide local residents with the opportunity to drive up and drop off potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs at the Glen Cove Police Department, 1 Bridge Street. “Last May our ‘Shed the Meds’ program collected 200 pounds of prescription and OTC medicines and 75 pounds of medical sharps and waste,” said Mayor Spinello. “Prescription and illegal drugs continue to take a devastating toll on Long Island and one of the best tools in prevention is our drug reclamation program,” added Dr. Sharon Harris, executive director of S.A.F.E. (Substance Abuse Free Environment).
The safe disposal of unused or expired drugs helps to eliminate the risk of these drugs getting into the hands of children or those who might misuse them and assists in the protection of Glen Cove’s water supply and landfills. S.A.F.E. will distribute prescription drug abuse literature to help educate adults regarding the warning signs of abuse and will hopefully prevent underage use.
Glen Cove’s Howl’oween Pet Parade – Unleash the Spooktacular Fun!
October 7, 2015… Glen Cove’s furriest residents are invited to participate in the Fifth Annual Howl’oween Pet Parade on Sunday, October 25th from noon to 2 p.m. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. behind Glen Cove City Hall at 9 Glen Street. In advance of the event; participants can also download a registration form at www.glencove-li.com.
People and pets alike are encouraged to dress in costume and participate in several contests being held. Prizes will be awarded in six categories: Smallest Pet, Biggest Pet, Most Exotic, Best Costume, Most Original Costume, and Best Pet/Owner Costume Combo. All registered participants will receive a free raffle ticket to win one of three gift baskets. “This is my dog Cooper’s favorite City event and as there are so many creative people in the Glen Cove community, I know the competition will be ‘ruff’,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello. Past parade entrants have included dogs, cats, guinea pigs, parrots and even a snake, with pet costumes ranging from super heroes to witches and even a horse.
