Glen Cove’s “In the Pink” Tulip Planting and Fall Cleanup
A Beautiful Opportunity to Help Glen Cove Bloom & Grow on Saturday, October 17th
October 2, 2015…Each Spring the City of Glen Cove welcomes the blooming of thousands of pink tulips thanks to the annual pink tulip bulb planting and fall clean-up sponsored by the Glen Cove Beautification Commission and Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S. (Cancer Awareness Resource Education Source). Held annually during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the program was created by the late Terry Petikas, the founder of Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S. Volunteers plant pink tulips each year to raise awareness of the importance of early cancer detection techniques.
Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S and the Beautification Commission invite volunteers to join them on Saturday, October 17th to plant over 1,000 tulip bulbs in a pink shade called “The Cure” and complete several small fall cleanup projects. In addition volunteers will have the opportunity to also plant mums at the various Adopt-A-Spot areas and in the City’s public gardens. Community service hours will be provided to students who participate in the program. “We encourage all residents, community groups and passionate gardeners with a ‘pink’ thumb to lend a helping hand,” said Darcy Belyea, Director of Glen Cove’s Parks & Recreation Department. “It is a privilege to work with Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S. to raise awareness about breast cancer and the critical importance of early detection and mammograms.”
Volunteers are asked to arrive at Glen Cove’s Village Square at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 17th, 2015. The rain date is Saturday, October 24. All supplies and assignments will be provided upon registration that morning. For more information, please call Department of Parks & Recreations at (516) 676-3766.
