City of Glen Cove Announces Search for City Christmas Tree Donation
Tree to be featured as part of 100th Anniversary “Tree of Light” Celebration
September 22, 2015…The search is on to find the perfect evergreen tree to be part of Glen Cove’s annual holiday celebration. “This year in particular is a very exciting one as Glen Cove will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Glen Cove’s Tree of Light,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello. “Our City’s outdoor holiday tree tradition began in 1915 when the first tree was erected at Highland Road and School Street (the former home of the Glen Cove Neighborhood Association) and strung with electric lights. History tells us that it took three days to wire the tree with lights and that the electricity to light the tree was donated by Glen Cove Light and Power Company.”
To find an extraordinary tree to be part of Glen Cove’s holiday celebration (and history), residents have the opportunity to donate an evergreen, spruce, fir or pine tree from their property and receive special recognition for their generosity during the City’s holiday festivities on November 28th sponsored by the Glen Cove Business Improvement District. Glen Cove’s Department of Public Works (DPW) will handle the final selection, harvesting, removal and delivery of the holiday tree to downtown Glen Cove for free.
According to Jim Byrne, DPW director, “we are looking for a fully symmetrical tree that is approximately 25 to 30 feet tall and easily accessible for removal.” Interested residents can call Glen Cove’s Department of Public Works at (516) 676-4402 to schedule an appointment for a tree assessment by the DPW team.
