Mayor Spinello Supports Senator Gillibrand’s Long Island Sound Restoration and Stewardship Act

2015-06-Gillibrand Press ConferenceJune 24, 2015…Glen Cove Mayor Spinello joined New York Senator Kristen Gillibrand yesterday as she announced the reintroduction of the Long Island Sound Restoration and Stewardship Act.  If passed, the bill would provide $65 million dollars to help to restore wetlands, replant sea grass, filter storm water, upgrade sewage treatment plants, and expand sewer access to communities here on the North Shore.  Recent high levels of nitrogen and toxic algae blooms in the Long Island Sound have contributed to large fish kills in Suffolk as well as local beach closures.  Other attendees included New York State Senator Jack Martins, Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Sea Cliff Mayor Bruce Kennedy, Eric Swenson of the Hempstead Harbor Protection Committee, and many other local officials and environmental supporters.  “I fully support the Long Island Sound Restoration and Stewardship Act,” said Mayor Spinello. “The Long Island Sound is an important part of our North Shore coastal lifestyle and I look forward to working with this group to help keep our waters safe, clean and sustainable for future generations.”
