U.S. Marine Corp. and City of Glen Cove to Host 2015 Annual Dan Daly Memorial Monument Rededication on June 24, 2015

June 17, 2015…In tribute to a true American hero and man of great valor, the United States Marine Corps and the City of Glen Cove will rededicate the Dan Daly Memorial Monument on Wednesday, June 24th at 4p.m. at Glen Cove’s Monument Park (Forest Avenue and Cottage Row). As part of the ceremonial proceedings, Glen Cove Mayor Reggie Spinello will recognize Glen Cove’s Sgt. Major Dan Daly and there will be a performance of a 16 piece U.S. Marine Corps. Band. “Sergeant Major Dan Daly was called the fightiest Marine ever known by a Marine Major General,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello. “It is an honor to remember our hometown hero and pay tribute to his service to the United States of America and the U.S. Marine Corps.”  For the one-hour ceremony, Forest Avenue will be closed from Cottage Row to Dosoris Lane.

Sergeant Major Daniel “Dan” Daly was a U.S. Marine who earned two Medals of Honor, the Navy Cross, the Army Distinguished Service Cross, the Purple Heart and the Croix de Guerre from France.   Daly was born on November 11, 1873 in Glen Cove, retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1929 and died in 1937.
