Teen Court a Learning Experience
Last week, Mayor Reginald Spinello witnessed the proceedings of the highly effective Glen Cove Teen Court Program. The program was implemented several years ago by City Court Judge Richard J. McCord in cooperation with the City of Glen Cove School District. Local high school students participate and act as judges, jurors and attorneys at sentencing hearings for teenage defendants accused of committing misdemeanors and violations. Once the defendant completes the requirements set by his or her peers, the misdemeanor and violation is removed from any record. Students are coached by Judge McCord, City attorneys, and other legal professionals.
The students pictured are: Brando Vizcarra, Alexandra Casale, Nicholas Melbinger, and Adriana Vertiz—prosecution lawyers; Delaney Montalto—Judge; Gina Mirakaj and Jordan Jackson—defense lawyers; Elizabeth Grieco—jury foreman; Gregory Jones—defense lawyer; Xavier Rivera, Stephanie Silva, Rose Martinez and Jesse Sosa Gonzales—members of the jury. The student who participated in the previous day’s Teen Court session are: Mikhaela James, Isaiah James, and Amanda Heavey. Their teacher is Christopher Contorno and he is joined by Dr. Michael Israel and Melanie Arfman of the Glen Cove School District; Kristina Heuser, our City Attorney; Sgt. Ryan Nardone and PO Ted Karousos of the Glen Cove Police Department.
