2014-10-28 Veterans Day Honoree

Mayor Reginald S. Spinello is pleased to announce that this year’s City of Glen Cove Veterans’ Day Honoree is Alan Frederick LaMere, a member of the VFW James Donohue Post 347 and a proud veteran who served with the United States Navy. The City’s Veterans’ Day ceremonies will be on Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Doughboy Monument on the corner at the Glen Cove Library.

Fred, as he is known around town, joined the Navy when he graduated from High School in 1955. He served on a fleet oiler whose assignments included fueling Navy ships in any of 21 countries including Lebanon in 1958. After the Navy, Fred was employed as an aviator at Grumman Aerospace. Among his responsibilities was testing aviation equipment as well as calibrating the computer system on the LEM. Having successfully taken the examination for the Nassau County Police Department and the City of Glen Cove Police Department, Fred was appointed to the Glen Cove Department in 1964. He served the Department for 26 years and has served the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department for 55 years. Fred was married to his “sweetheart from Philadelphia,” the late Eva. They had six children, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
