Glen Cove and US Marines to Honor Sgt.Maj. Dan Daly
Tribute for Two-Time Medal of Honor Hero is June 21
The Marines are Coming! On June 21, 2014, the United States Marine Corps will be in Glen Cove for a day of activities dedicated to honoring Sgt. Major Dan Daly, our City’s two-time Medal of Honor recipient during the early 1900s. Sgt. Major Daly is the US Marine Corps most admired heroes and his hometown of Glen Cove takes great pride in honoring his legacy.
Mayor Reginald Spinello said, “I invite everyone in our community to join the City Council and me for this wonderful event. June 21 will begin at 9 a.m. with the rededication of the Sgt. Major Dan Daly monument in Monument Park. The ceremony will be attended by Barbara Ransweiler Harcourt, the Sgt Major’s great-grand-niece and her family, the 30-member Quantico Marine Corps band, 300 Marines, the Glen Cove High School Select Chorale, and dignitaries.”
Following the ceremony at Monument Park, the Marines will parade down Dosoris Lane to the high school football field for the inaugural Sgt. Maj. Dan Daly Cup lacrosse tournament between the best Nassau and Suffolk high school junior boys lacrosse teams. The tournament is in partnership with the Glen Cove School District, the Nassau County Lacrosse Coaches Association, and the NY Lizards professional lacrosse organization.
