On Saturday, May 10 and in spite of weather reports, Glen Cove was a hub of activities with two special events. Local Boy and Girl Scout Troops “took over” Pratt Park for a wonderful “Scoutapalooza.” The Scouts celebrated the Scouting programs and Community Service by showcasing a variety of skills. Demonstrations were offered by Scouts of all ages regarding personal safety, tying knots, a Pinewood Derby and even box oven cooking. They installed a flower bed around the 9-11 Memorial in the park. They constructed a flowerbed around the large rock in the park with the plaque designating the site as “Pratt Park” They planted hardy annuals there and will follow up with mulching and watering.
Mayor Reginald Spinello said, “I learned more information about practical experience in my two hours with the kids than I learned in my years in school. At the Senior Center the Senior Recognition Day Committee organized a great tribute to our senior citizens. Once again, a group of Glen Cove volunteers provided a rewarding experience for our youth and for our seniors.”

The City’s 8th annual Senior Recognition Day was held at the Glen Cove Senior Center because of threatening weather. The Senior Day Committee chose Janina Jania to receive the Volunteer of the Year Award and Carolyn Willson to receive the Lifetime Achievement award. The Bob Howard Community Leadership Award was given to Assemblyman Charles Lavine. Special recognition was given to s five centenarians: Charles Klein, Irene Mencuccina, Nadine Vorburger, Rose Paparillo, and Vincenza Giordano. Visitors enjoyed tasting food, refreshments, and goodies offered by the staff of the Glen Cove Senior Center; The Regency at Glen Cove; Glengariff Health Care Center; The Atria of Glen Cove; Sunrise Senior Living; the North Shore Hospital at Glen Cove and the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District. A representative from the Nassau County Office for the Aging had important informational packets for seniors and quite a few vendors had interesting gift items for sale. The Les Stanco Group provided background music through the day and the talented Golden Voices Chorale Group once again provided a lovely repertoire.
