Residents Encouraged to Drop Off Expired/Unused RX Drugs and Medical Supplies
Oct 6, 2015…Mayor Reggie Spinello, S.A.F.E Glen Cove Coalition along with the Glen Cove Police Department, EMS, and the Glen Cove Downtown B.I.D. have scheduled the fall “Drug Reclamation Day” aka “Shed The Meds” collection day for Saturday, October 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to provide local residents with the opportunity to drive up and drop off potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs at the Glen Cove Police Department, 1 Bridge Street. “Last May our ‘Shed the Meds’ program collected 200 pounds of prescription and OTC medicines and 75 pounds of medical sharps and waste,” said Mayor Spinello. “Prescription and illegal drugs continue to take a devastating toll on Long Island and one of the best tools in prevention is our drug reclamation program,” added Dr. Sharon Harris, executive director of S.A.F.E. (Substance Abuse Free Environment).
The safe disposal of unused or expired drugs helps to eliminate the risk of these drugs getting into the hands of children or those who might misuse them and assists in the protection of Glen Cove’s water supply and landfills. S.A.F.E. will distribute prescription drug abuse literature to help educate adults regarding the warning signs of abuse and will hopefully prevent underage use.
