Glen Cove, NY, October 7, 2015…Mayor Reggie Spinello announced today that a 60 day review of the City’s new Single Stream Recycling program has found that recycling in Glen Cove has increased by 28 percent. The program, which began on August 3, offered the community a more convenient way to recycle by allowing resident to place ALL of their recyclable materials into one blue recycling bin or use one of their own garbage cans with a Single Stream sticker. “This is great news for the City of Glen Cove and reflective of the outstanding commitment of our residents and the City’s Sanitation team to help make our City greener and reduce the trash being sent to our landfills,” said Mayor Spinello. “Initial reports also show that our MSW (mixed solid waste) disposal has already decreased by a few percentage points. As MSW tonnage varies throughout the year, we will conduct both a six month and annual analysis to best understand the impact to Glen Cove’s bottom line. Since adopting Single Stream Recycling and arming our residents with information, what we have seen in this short time frame is rather fascinating. Our Sanitation team reports that in addition to more day-to-day items being recycled there has been an increase in accepted materials such as more yard waste, plastic playground equipment, outdoor toys and plastic lawn furniture.”
