Glen Cove “Shed the Meds” Program Collects over 250 pounds of Expired/Unused RX Drugs and Medical Supplies

2015-05-09 ShedTheMedsMay 8, 2015…Mayor Reggie Spinello along with the Glen Cove Police Department, EMS, S.A.F.E Glen Cove Coalition and the Glen Cove Downtown B.I.D. offered local residents the opportunity to drive up and drop off potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs at the Glen Cove Police Department on Saturday, May 2. “This was our most successful Shed the Meds program ever as we collected 200 pounds of prescription and OTC medicines and 75 pounds of medical sharps and waste,” said Mayor Spinello.

The safe disposal of unused or expired drugs assists in the protection of Glen Cove’s water supply and landfills and helps to eliminate the risk of these drugs getting into the hands of children or those who might misuse them. The prescription drug abuse literature provided by SAFE will educate adults regarding the warning signs of abuse and will hopefully prevent underage use.
