The members of the reorganized Glen Cove Harbor Patrol were sworn in by Mayor Reginald Spinello during the July 22nd City Council meeting. The ceremony was particularly poignant because it also involved the retirement of the Harbor Patrol badge worn by Rick Douglas, an active and dedicated member of the patrol who died recently.

The safety of recreational boaters and anglers on the waters surrounding our community is under the supervision of the City’s Harbor Patrol. The members’ responsibilities include keeping an eye out for anyone operating a boat recklessly or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Part of the Harbor Patrol’s community outreach is to emphasize the potentially life-saving importance of wearing life jackets while boating; that boat operators must be aware of the maximum person capacity on their vessel and to remind everyone that communication devices are one of the most important items on a boat in case of emergency; it can be a cell phone or VHF radio, or personal locator beacon.
